My Star Wars Prequel Problem

The first two releases Episodes 4 & 5 were dark films in many ways. Leia gets to make a Sophie's choice for an entire planet to be destroyed. Luke's hand is cut off, Ben is struck down. Luke finds the charred bodies of Jawas, and his aunt and uncle. Solo gets frozen, Luke nearly dies of exposure. The list goes on and on. Then the release of 'Return' brings the teddy bears, and as my friend T once said 'too many puppets' it's all been downhill since then. They lost their edge, and got too cute.

Oh and in Episode 2 we learn that R2 can fly WTF? Where was this skill when we needed it?
